Disability due to a brain injury is a tragic but, unfortunately, not a rare occurrence. There are approximately 175,000 New Jerseyans living with a disability due to a traumatic event. According to the state Department of Health and Senior Services about 12,000-15,000 state residents suffer a brain injury each year due to a traumatic event, 1,000 of which are fatal. The majority of these injuries affect those under the age of 35, but rates raise sharply after the age of 65, primarily due to an increase in falls.

The New Jersey Commission on Brain Injury Research provides a stable source of funding for research grants in this area. The funding is raised through a $1 surcharge on all traffic violations issued in the state, totaling approximately $3.6 million annually.
