About 1.5 million New Jerseyans are volunteering their time through local groups, civic associations, and houses of worship, according to Volunteering in America. That translates into 22 percent of the state's population.

Nevertheless, that ranks New Jersey 46th in the nation in terms of volunteer activity and dead last in terms of hours (25.5 per resident.) That may be why the Christie Administration has begun a campaign to highlight the holidays as "A Season of Service" and is urging residents to get involved with some nonprofit organization.
