With more than 11,000 solar systems installed in the state, New Jersey is second only to California in the number of solar arrays producing power. As of October 31, the state's installed solar capacity was 490 megawatts, with an additional 571 megawatts in the pipeline. A megawatt typically produces enough energy to power 800 homes, but that is not always true of solar energy because the sun does not always shine, resulting in less energy produced because of its intermittent nature.
