Approximately 1.35 million children head back this week to the 2,485 public schools in New Jersey. They will be taught by approximately 113,000 full-time teachers. The public schools have about 136,440 staff with educational credentials, but that also includes administrators and support specialists.
The median salary for a teacher last year was $59,670. Median salary for an administrator was $116,305 and principals earned a median of $125,344. Superintendents of schools earned a median of $169,000.
These numbers are sure to be part of the discussion in the coming year as Gov. Chris Christie charges ahead with his school and tax reform agenda.
