There were 637,000 union members in New Jersey in 2010, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. That makes up about 17.2 percent of the workforce, a drop from 19.3 percent in 2009.

The BLS also shows that there has been a drop of 4.4 percent in government workers in the past 12 months, while there has been an increase of 2.7 percent in construction, 2.2 percent in professional and business services, 2.0 percent in education and health services, and 2.0 percent in leisure and hospitality. Nevertheless, the unemployment rate for July remains stuck at 9.5 percent, and hasn’t moved below 9 percent since April 2009.
