The state Department of Children and Families facilitated 1,171 adoptions of children in foster care in 2010. Although it is the smallest number of adoptions in the past five years, DCF deems the 6,900 children that have been adopted out of the foster system since the beginning of 2006 "significant progress" in reducing the number of eligible adoptees. The state has seen 91 teens over the age of 14 adopted in that time.

There are 1,236 children that are in state protective care but are legally free for adoption.
