178,831

March 31, 2011

There are 178,831 grandparents living with their grandchildren in New Jersey, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. And for the most part, that means a grandparent living in a multigenerational home with parents taking responsibility for the child.

Only 51,671 grandparents -- 65.7 percent of them female -- have the primary responsibility for the grandchildren in their homes.

Of the total population of grandparents who do live with their children and grandchildren, 53.3 percent are white, 21.7 percent are black, 21.6 percent are Latino and 14 percent are Asian. The racial and ethnic background of grandparents that do care for their grandchildren are relatively similar, although there are a higher percentage of black grandparents (33.4 percent vs. 21.7 percent) and lower percentage of Asians (5.3 percent vs. 14 percent) with the primary responsibility for their grandchildren. Only 9.3 percent of grandparents living with grandchildren do not also have the parent living with them.
