It’s a pretty big number to wrap your mind around, but it represents an important statistic: the hottest summer on record resulted in record electricity usage -- 203,681,531 megawatts of power on the region’s transmission grid -- without a widespread outage. That’s enough electricity to supply Mexico for an entire year, according to PJM Interconnection, which runs the grid for New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Washington D.C., and ten other states. The amount of electricity used was about 12 percent more than last year, which was cooler than normal.
