5.8 million

July 30, 2010

The roads always seem crowded in the Garden State -- and for good reason. There are about 5.8 million licensed drivers in the state, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration. Drivers are about evenly split between male (2.8 million) and female (2.9 million.) Of these, about 250,000 are teenagers; teens begin to get their licenses in large numbers at the age of 17. At the other end of the spectrum, New Jersey has more than 200,000 drivers over the age of 80. In 2008, the most recent year with data available, there were 76,387 drivers over the age of 85.
