Commuting in New Jersey takes its toll by the half-hour: The U.S. Census Bureau’s Quick Facts page says the mean travel time for getting to work in the Garden State is exactly 30 minutes. That’s higher than the national mean of 25.5 minutes, and it may have to do with the well-known fact that New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the U.S. -- with 1,134.5 people per square mile, compared to just 79.6 nationally. Looking to trim that trip? Consider moving to Cape May County, where the average daily ride is 23.2 minutes. At the other end of the extreme is the other end of the state: Sussex County commuters endure 38.3 minutes on average.
