One of the most contentious issues in the New Jersey 2010-11 budget was the initial cut in funding for 304 public libraries around the state. The first budget proposed by Gov. Chris Christie slashed total funding (including the state library) by 74 percent and eliminated much of the support for local libraries. The negotiated budget bill agreement S3000 restores $4.3 million in local library funding, which is the 2010 level. It also provides funding for the state library at its 2010 level. The total state contribution for libraries is $15 million.
