Memorial Day weekend is the perfect time for a bike ride—whether it’s a family cruise or a challenging uphill climb. And New Jerseyans can enjoy a ride this weekend happy in the knowledge that their state has been ranked the eighth Bicycle Friendly State by the League of American Bicyclists, behind mostly rural states like Washington, Wisconsin and Maine. What merited New Jersey this honor? Out of six criteria, the state got big kudos for its policies and programs and for its infrastructure, tying for third in both categories. But New Jersey was a bottom-feeder in terms of education and enforcement, two criteria that call for promoting cycling to the public, as well as to law enforcement and the judiciary.
